Two-time All-Star forward Filip Forsberg is drawing most of the attention as the Nashville Predators visit his native Sweden this week for the NHL Global Series.
The team even designed a limited edition bobblehead of his likeness – complete with a bobbling Forsberg mustache – as a giveaway to promote the event.
However, it’s rookie defenseman Adam Wilsby who will serve as the Predators’ primary tour guide during their weeklong stay in Stockholm.
“(Forsberg) kind of put that on me,” Wilsby told Main Street Nashville. “I’m from Stockholm – he’s not – so I know the area a little better. I don’t mind that. I want to make sure the guys have a good experience over there.”
On-ice results, of course, will be a key part of the rare international trip.
Nashville (5-9-4) has one win over its last nine games and desperately needs a reset. The Predators play the Pittsburgh Penguins (9-5-3) Friday at 1 p.m. central time and again Sunday at 8 a.m. inside Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. Both games will be televised by FanDuel Sports Network.
“I think for us, we’re in a day-to-day process,” Predators coach Andrew Brunette said on Nov. 6. “It’s been a crazy stretch of games … This is a crucial time for our team. We talk about it every day. We have to stay in the mix.”
The Predators arrived in Stockholm Tuesday morning following a 6-3 road loss to the New York Rangers.
Outside of morning practices on Wednesday and Saturday, the players will have time to be tourists, clear their heads and hang out together.
“It’s such a cool place,” center Ryan O’Reilly said. “To be able to go over there, see that as a group and spend a little time together, it’s a great opportunity for us to really get tighter and be closer. We’re excited for it.”
This year’s NHL Global Series represents Nashville’s third chance to play international regular-season games. The Predators faced the Penguins in Japan for a pair of games in October 2000 and played the San Jose Sharks twice in Prague, Czech Republic, in October 2022.
Before arriving in Prague that year, the Predators met SC Bern for an exhibition game in Roman Josi’s hometown, where the Switzerland native received a raucous pregame ovation.
Wilsby plans to hand out at least 15 or 20 tickets to family and friends this week. Goaltenders Justus Annunen and Juuse Saros, who both hail from neighboring Finland, will also have small groups of family on hand.
Forsberg grew up in Leksand, roughly 160 miles northwest of Stockholm. His wife Erin and young son Felix were expected to make the trip, along with other close friends and relatives.
He’s just not anticipating the same hero’s welcome Josi received in Switzerland.
“Definitely not,” Forsberg said when the Global Series announcement was made in March. “I don’t know if I have any fans in Stockholm. But I do know the Leksand proud will travel well and hopefully be well represented.”
