Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has given an update recently on contract negotiations with pending unrestricted free agent forward Kiefer Sherwood. While next offseason is still about five months away, depending on how the Vancouver Canucks’ 2025-26 campaign goes, the team is already looking ahead and starting to figure out the best course of action when it comes to their pending unrestricted free agents, including Kiefer Sherwood.Sherwood became eligible to sign a contract extension in July and while some preliminary discussions took place, both sides decided to hold off on a deal to see how this season plays out and for the Columbus, Ohio native, that appears to be working out in his favour as he leads the Canucks in goals and is set for a big pay day next summer.
“I don’t see this deal being anywhere below $4m [AAV]” David Pagnotta said recently.
Vancouver Canucks Patrik Allvin gives update on Kiefer Sherwood negotiations
During an appearance on After Hours on Saturday night with Scott Oake and Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin gave an update on where things stand on contract talks with Kiefer Sherwood and his camp.
“Well, it’s still early here. We’ve played I believe 16 games? Kiefer has been a good player for us. He plays his role really well and he’s a guy that can play different positions in the lineup and I think he’s effective in the bottom-six when he plays his role with intensity and finishes checks and brings the energy everyday. So we’re very happy with him here. We’ll see. I only have so much money with the cap, so at the end of the day that’ll dictate if we can afford players or not.” Allvin said.
That will be the big thing in the spring, can the Vancouver Canucks find the money to re-sign Kiefer Sherwood and if not, will he be moved for assets that can help the team next season and beyond, depending on where the team is in the NHL’s standing heading into early March.
For now, it’s hard to blame either side for wanting to be patient as Kiefer Sherwood doesn’t want to sign for less than what he’s worth and the Canucks don’t want to hand out more money than they’re willing to pay without thinking about future free agent and trade possibilities next summer.
