VOORHEES, N.J. — It wasn’t all that long ago when Owen Tippett was racing out of the chute.
He had five goals in the Flyers’ first six games, opening the eyes of his coach and teammates.
But since then, Tippett has gone nine straight games without a goal. He has an assist and a minus-8 rating over that span.
“I still think I’m getting those chances that I was earlier in the year,” the 26-year-old winger said Wednesday after morning skate. “It’s easy to get frustrated when you’re not getting chances, but I think it’s just a matter of time before one of them breaks and hopefully get on a little streak again.”
Tippett entered Wednesday’s home game against the Oilers (7:30 p.m. ET/NBCSP) with a team-high 42 shots. With his blend of power and speed, Tippett is one of the Flyers’ most dynamic threats up front. But he has battled the streaky label over parts of five seasons with the Flyers.
Rick Tocchet wants to see Tippett be more consistently engaged throughout the course of the game.
“He has been getting chances, he has had a couple of breakaways in those nine games, he has had a 2-on-1, he has had some slot shots,” the Flyers’ head coach said Tuesday after practice. “But there are parts of his game, he knows, we had a meeting the other day — he kind of gets in and out of the game, he has got to stay a little bit more focused in the game, I think that’ll help him.
“But he knows it and he’s working on that part, the mental part of it. The good thing is he’s getting chances. If I sat up here and said, ‘Man, this guy’s getting no chances,’ then I’d be concerned. He is getting chances. But there is some stuff that he needs to clean up.”
Sometimes, halting a slump can simply boil down to sticking with it and falling back on good habits.
“I think you can find yourself trying to almost do too much at times,” Tippett said. “I think early on in the year, I was kind of waiting more patiently, waiting for the game to come to me in a sense. I think it’s just trying to be more even-keeled with that when you’re not scoring.
“Obviously there are a few things that I can do better to put myself in better opportunities consistently, but I’m still getting those shots and those opportunities, so I think it’s just a matter of time.”
