Detroit Red Wings prospect Amadeus Lombardi only has one American Hockey League goal this season and it’s one he won’t forget soon.

Lombardi scored a breakaway tally 39 seconds into overtime to give the Grand Rapids Griffins a 3-2 triumph against the Toronto Marlies in their annual School Day matinee game. The win gives Grand Rapids a 10-game points streak to start the NHL season. Coach Dan Watson’s Griffins have won eight in regulation, one in OT and lost a shootout.

The Lombardi goal made a winner of Red Wings draft pick goalie Carter Gylander (191st, 2019) who was brought up from the Toledo Walleye last week because of an injury suffered by Sebastian Cossa. With Michal Postava getting hurt Sunday, Gylander is now the starter, at least until Cossa (day-to-day) returns to the lineup.

On Monday, the Griffins signed Kalamazoo Wings (ECHL) goalie Luke Pavicich to a tryout contract. The Griffins also signed Walleye forward Nolan Moyle to a tryout deal. He played in the matinee and recorded one shot on goal with two penalty minutes.

Gylander did his part, making 34 saves to earn his third career AHL victory. He also assisted on Lombardi’s game-winner.

Lombardi also delivered his 11th assist in 10 games in the third period to create Austin Watson’s game-tying power play goal. Erik Gustafsson also assisted on that tally.

The Griffins beat an NHL goalie in the game. Joseph Wall, with the Marlies on a conditioning stint, made 25 saves.

Lombardi is on the short list to be called up to Detroit at some point this season. He’s a dynamic skater and slick playmaker. The negative: he’s a smaller forward. While trying to beef up, the Red Wings have asked him to hone his defensive game.
