POTSDAM, New York (WWNY) – A mid-season showdown between Clarkson and St. Lawrence University drew one of the biggest crowds of the year as children from across the county filled the stands.
Most kids at Cheel Area on Wednesday afternoon would tell you it beats any day in the classroom.
“Just happy to be here with my classmates, watching hockey,” said Kyle White, a 7th grader at Colton-Pierrepont Central School.
Clarkson and St. Lawrence’s Division 1 women’s hockey teams faced off in their 3rd annual kids game.
It’s an event that brings roughly 3,000 kids from around the county to cheer on their favorite team, not using their indoor voices.
Madrid-Waddington Central School District brought all its elementary students to the game.
“It beats a math class and stuff like that, so it’s a great opportunity for students in the North Country to experience something like this,” said Brittany Lapinski, a 5th grade teacher at Madrid-Waddington.
And on the ice, players look forward to playing for a packed rink. Clarkson assistant captain Keira Hurry says it’s the biggest crowd they see in Potsdam during their season.
“They bring a lot of energy, so I think it’s easy to get out for this early game because we know we’re going to be playing in front of 3,000 kids that are just screaming and bringing a ton of energy, so it’s definitely easy to get up, and it’s exciting to play it,” she said.
Clarkson picked up a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence.
