Overtime has become a pretty regular part of the Flyers’ schedule this season. Wednesday’s game marked the 10th time in 16 games the Flyers have needed extra time.
For a few fleeting moments, they thought that wouldn’t be necessary. A late deflection goal by Travis Konecny gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with 23.5 seconds to play, only for an offside challenge to overturn the goal and send things to overtime.
Oilers forward Jack Roslovic finished things off just 1:19 into overtime, as a turnover led to a 2-on-0, and handed the Flyers another heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
An entertaining opening period featured chances at both ends. But in the final seven minutes of the first, the Oilers started to take control. They finally cashed in with under a minute to play in the period.
Evan Bouchard fired a one-timer past Dan Vladar after Connor McDavid won a race to a loose puck to set him up for his third goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 13-5 Edmonton.
The Oilers kept the pressure on early in the second, opening up a 24-6 lead in shots. The Flyers finished the second period with five of the last six shots on goal, one of them finding the net on the power play.
Matvei Michkov scored for the third straight game, firing a shot from the left circle to make it 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season.
Through two periods, shots were 25-11 Edmonton.
The Flyers out-shot the Oilers, 9-5, in the third period, making a push late with a pair of power-play chances in the third. In the final minute, they appeared to get the goal that decided the game.
A point shot by Travis Sanheim was deflected in by Konecny with 23.5 seconds left. But after a review, the play was determined to be offside and play continued on to overtime.
Roslovic took care of things in overtime, finishing on the feed from Matthew Savoie on a 2-on-0 rush to hand the Flyers a fourth straight loss on home ice.
Stuart Skinner had 20 saves on 21 shots for the Oilers in the win. Vladar made 30 saves on 32 shots in the loss.
Savoie had two assists for Edmonton.
The Flyers hit the road for a back-to-back this weekend. It starts on Friday night against the St. Louis Blues at 8 p.m.
