It was the Yaroslav Askarov show as the Calgary Flames beat the San Jose Sharks 2-0 on Thursday.
The Sharks’ loss tonight was their first in regulation in eight games. Askarov did everything he could to help a struggling team in front of him. The young netminder made 34 saves.
Blake Coleman scored the game-winning goal and his 7th goal of the season. Samuel Honzek added an empty net goal with six seconds left. Dustin Wolf wasn’t busy as the San Jose Sharks only mustered 15 shots.
Despite coming in on a three-game win streak, the Flames didn’t play like the NHL’s last-place team. They took it to the Sharks the entire game. The fact that the score remained close is a testament to Askarov’s excellent play.

Jeff Skinner left the game on his first shift due to a lower-body injury.
Coleman gave the Flames a 1-0 lead 5:46 into the second period. After Sam Dickinson and Philipp Kurashev had a miscommunication, Coleman stole the puck and scored on the breakaway.
Samuel Honzek added the empty net goal with six seconds left.
