Adrian Kempe‘s future in Los Angeles has been the source of much speculation recently, and now, the talks over a major extension have heated up.The Los Angeles Kings have been leaning on their core for a long time, but with Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty‘s career’s both quickly coming to an end, they need to find the next generation to lead them moving forward.
The perfect leader for that future core is already in Los Angeles with Adrian Kempe, who has been in Los Angeles since 2016, but now, he’s set to be a free agent in the summer of 2026.
Talks around an Adrian Kempe extension heating up
According to reports from NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Kings are looking to lock up their 29-year old star before he gets to free agency, and after meeting in Toronto this past week, speculation is heating up around a long-term extension.
Not long later, President Luc Robitaille shared a similar update, revealing the meetings between Holland and Kempe’s agent as they believe there is urgency to get a deal done.
Ken [Holland] and [Adrian Kempe’s agent] J.P. Barry have been meeting in Toronto. Talks are continuing… and we totally understand the urgency.
This season, Kempe has 6 goals and 18 points across 17 games, with many in the Kings organization believing that his best days are still ahead of him, with the opportunity to potentially be captain in the years to come.
The salary Kempe will receive is unknown, but rumours have been persistent that he is looking for an eight-figure amount. An extension will likely land between $80 million to $100 million over eight years.
Ultimately, it makes sense for the two parties to get a deal done, as Kempe can still be a key piece of the Kings forward with all of his experience and love for the organization, so don’t be shocked if a deal gets done before the trade deadline this season.
