The Edmonton Oilers have officially placed Troy Stecher on waivers, and sent Ike Howard to the AHL to make room for the return of Zach Hyman from injury.

With 8 defenders on the roster, it was clear that one needed to be shipped off. NHL insiders reported the Oilers were looking to find a new home for Stecher, but unfortunately, nothing materialized.

Edmonton Oilers place Troy Stecher on waivers, send Howard to AHL to activate Zach Hyman

The Edmonton Oilers formally announced the three roster moves this afternoon.

It’s tough to see Stecher potentially depart the team after being such an underrated contributor since joining the team in 2024. He reliably fulfilled every expectation of a bottom pair defender whenever he was called upon, and always stayed ready even when scratched. Called in to play 8 playoff games last year, the team clearly thought highly of him.

It’s unlikely Stecher will clear waivers, as many teams would be willing to claim the 31 year old veteran for defensive depth, especially on a cheap contract of only $787K.

Sending down Ike Howard is a disappointing sign for the Oilers, unfortunately. Acquired by the Lightning in trade, the Oilers had hopes he would be an immediate offensive piece for their roster.

Howard clearly has some weaknesses in his game that will be helped by some development time in the AHL, but it’s hard to say he was put in a position to succeed with the Oilers. Coach Knoblauch played him the least of any forward, and almost always in 4th line minutes and linemates.

While it’s tough to see two players depart, the Oilers have great news with the return of Hyman. He’s been a key missing piece of the Oilers offence which is struggling at 5v5. His return could be a season-turning moment for the team.

Tomorrow night against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Oilers will have a tough challenge to skate off the loss against Columbus, and earn a win against a much tougher opponent.
