Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford said there was some miscommunication earlier this year about if the club would bring back Pius Suter. To make matters worse, on the second day of free agency the Vancouver Canucks lost centerman Pius Suter, who signed a two-year contract with the St. Louis Blues. With the Canucks dealing with a number of injuries to their forward group since the start of the 2025-26 season, it looks like the club may come to regret not re-signing the Zurich, Switzerland native when they had the opportunity to and this week, Jim Rutherford gave some insight into those contract negotiations between the two sides.
Jim Rutherford admits there was miscommunication about Pius Suter returning
Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre recently sat down with the Canucks’ President of Hockey Operations to discuss a number of topics including the potential for the club to rebuild, Quinn Hughes’ future and his thoughts on how the team has performed so far this season.
Rutherford also spoke about Pius Suter, who he thought the club still had a chance to bring back right up until the moment he signed with the St. Louis Blues in early July.
He went on to add that there ended up being a bit of miscommunication between the two sides regarding the term of Pius Suter’s contract, with Rutherford saying that the club would have considered going beyond the two years that he eventually got from the Blues.
“I was going to mention him earlier. He was a guy that we thought we were still in on when he went to St Louis. And I know he wanted to come back here. There seemed to be some miscommunication on term (based on) what it eventually ended up. We would have considered bringing him back (for longer than two years), but it didn’t work out.” Rutherford said.
Suter appears to be fitting in well with the St. Louis Blues, playing mostly a second line role, which is exactly what the Vancouver Canucks need at the moment and if the 29-year-old finds a way to replicate his production from last season, Patrik Allvin and Co. will undoubtedly question if they made the right decision to let him walk.
