Scoring Summary
Period 1:
Detroit 1-0 Patrick Kane (goal), Ben Chiarot (assist): After a Sabres turnover, Chiarot makes a perfect feed to the stick of Patrick Kane, who deflects the puck in. Axel Sandin-Pellikka does not get an assist, although he made a great play to keep the pressure on.
Tied 1-1 Alex Tuch (goal): After a lost face-off, a puck floated to the net is batted at by Seider, and Edvinsson crashes into John Gibson, leaving Alex Tuch to punch in an easy goal in a scramble.
Period 2:
Detroit 2-1 Alex DeBrincat (goal), Lucas Raymond (assist): Lucas Raymond pressures in the offensive zone after a Bowen Byram turnover, Raymond ultimately knocks the puck out in front to DeBrincat, who takes two tries to bury his goal.
Detroit 3-1 Dylan Larkin (goal), Lucas Raymond (assist), Moritz Seider (assist): On a four-on-four shift, Dylan Larkin leads Lucas Raymond, who sees him back in the slot to knock in his 11th goal of the season.
Detroit 4-1 Alex DeBrincat (PP goal), Lucas Raymond (assist), Moritz Seider (assist): As DeBrincat looks to go across the seam to Patrick Kane, the puck deflects in off a Buffalo stick. Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat both have back-to-back 3-point games.
Detroit 4-2 Josh Doan (goal), Rasmus Dahlin (assist), Bowen Byram (assist): Dahlin’s shot hits Doan standing in front of the net, deflecting the opposite way to beat Red Wings goaltender John Gibson.
Period 3:
Detroit 4-3 Tage Thompson (goal), Josh Doan (assist), Colton Ellis (assist): Tage Thompson continues his torrid pace against the Red Wings, shoving DeBrincat out of the way before wrapping the puck into the net.
Tied 4-4 Ryan McCloud (SH goal): Moritz Seider gets his pocket picked on the power play, and it leads to a breakaway for McCloud, and Gibson continues to do too little for the Red Wings as the Sabres tie the game, taking all momentum.
Overtime:
Buffalo 5-4 Mattias Samuelsson (goal), Tage Thompson (assist): Thompson, for the second time, shoves DeBrincat to the ice to set up Samuelsson, who fires five-hole past John Gibson. The Sabres come all the way back, and the Red Wings choke away a sure thing.
Storylines:
John Gibson Playing Awful: It’s been weeks now of Gibson being inconsistent and frequently letting in more goals than he should. Detroit has needed help from their goaltending, and if there is going to be any, it is likely to come from Cam Talbot.
Simon Edvinsson Struggling: Simon Edvinsson has continued a poor season in this game. Bad pinches, poor positioning, and bad penalties. Edvinsson simply looks like he is lacking hockey IQ. The past few games from Edvinsson have seen him constantly making the wrong play. The biggest one is his defensive lapses, his stick tension, and poor positioning, which constantly have him losing the puck, floating to the wrong areas, and turning over the puck. He is trying to do too much on both ends, and for now, he needs to simplify his game.
Larkin, Raymond, and DeBrincat Look Good: The new top line has looked remarkable through their games together. In two games, DeBrincat has four goals, and Lucas Raymond has five points. The team looks much improved since stacking the top line, and this will likely be the case for the foreseeable future.
Thompson Remains Stellar Against Wings: A goal and an assist, Thompson has continued to feast against a Red Wings team that allows outside shots frequently. His shooting and size have proven to be a problem even for Moritz Seider, who can struggle to take him down.
Red Wings Powerplay Struggles: The Red Wings score one on five attempts and give up a shorthanded goal. Moritz Seider continues to put shots wide that lead to the puck going down the ice, as well as losing the puck at the blue line. At this point, Seider does nothing Sandin-Pellikka couldn’t do. It’s time to give it a shake-up.
Red Wings to Play Rangers Tomorrow:Â The Red Wings play the second night of a back-to-back against a Rangers team that is also playing a back-to-back, as they are taking on the Blue Jackets tonight.
