LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — More than 100 volunteers teamed up Saturday morning to prepare thousands of donated books for children across Las Vegas.
Southwest Gas employees, members of the Vegas Golden Knights organization, and their families gathered at Spread the Word Nevada’s facility on Arville Street from 9 to 11 a.m. to clean, organize, and repair gently used books.
The effort was part of Southwest Gas’ BLUE program, Building Lives Up Everywhere, and continued the company’s long-standing partnership with the Golden Knights.
Volunteers wiped down covers, removed stickers, and repaired minor damage so the books could be delivered to 61 elementary schools in underserved communities throughout the Clark County School District.
Chance, the Golden Knights’ mascot, and members of the Vegas Vivas also made an appearance, cheering on volunteers as they worked through stacks of donated books.
Organizers said the event reflects both groups’ commitment to supporting literacy and expanding access to reading materials for local students.
The collaboration builds on Southwest Gas’ ongoing community efforts, including more than $45,000 donated to Spread the Word Nevada through its foundation since 2013.
The company has also funded a delivery van used to distribute books, while employees have contributed more than $260,000 to the nonprofit through its workplace giving program, FUEL for LIFE, since 2012.
Representatives from all three organizations, including Elyse Scheri of Southwest Gas, Nick Trujillo of the Vegas Golden Knights, and Dane Neves of Spread the Word Nevada, attended the event.
