The Los Angeles Kings continued to look razor-sharp on the road Saturday evening as they snuck out a 1-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre. Los Angeles improved to 10-5-4, overtaking the Ducks for first place in the Pacific Division.
In a battle where shots and scores were hard to come by, it was Mikey Anderson and Alex Laferriere who combined to provide the only goal that the Kings would end up needing. Anderson fired a deep shot from the center ice line that ultimately deflected off Laferriere and into the net to get Los Angeles in front halfway through the opening period.
Eventually holding to represent the game-winning score, it marked the second consecutive game with a goal for Laferriere. The 24-year-old extended his point streak to four games, using his fifth score of the season on Saturday to hand the Senators their first deficit in a game since Nov. 6.
The biggest performance of the night for the Kings came from goaltender Anton Forsberg, who saved 17 shots en route to earning his first shutout of the year and improving to 3-2-1. The ex-Senator got the start in place of Darcy Kuemper, keeping his former team from scoring a goal for the first time this season.
“He was unbelievable, to be able to do that in front of a crowd that you used to play for is extremely hard,” said Laferriere regarding his teammate. “I thought he handled himself unbelievably and we wouldn’t have won that game without him.”
Forsberg played with the Senators for five seasons from 2020-2025 before joining the Kings this past offseason. The 32-year-old came up big in a tense environment to earn his signature win thus far for the team.
It was an excellent defensive effort for Los Angeles as they stood firm through all 60 minutes to extend what has been quite a successful stretch of games against Ottawa. The Kings extended their point streak over the Senators to 11 games with the victory (8-0-3) dating back to Nov. 7, 2019.Â
That marks the longest active point streak against any one opponent for Los Angeles and is tied for the second-longest active point streak among all NHL teams against the Senators. It is the ninth different point streak of at least 11 games against any one opponent in franchise history.
Now off to a 4-0 start on their six-game road trip, the Kings continue to boast their poise and promise away from home. The squad is off to a 9-1-2 start on the road this season, marking the most road victories in the NHL.
Despite a long list of positives to take away from Saturday’s win, Los Angeles will hold their breath as they await to hear the news on defenseman Drew Doughty. He exited the game in the second period after blocking a shot off his foot before eventually being ruled out for the rest of the night. As a key part of the equation, the Kings will hope that Doughty is able to return to the ice soon and avoid a serious injury.
In the mean time, the road trip will keep rolling into Washington D.C. as Los Angeles will face the Capitals on Monday afternoon. Washington has gotten off to a slow start this year, currently sitting in last place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 8-8-1.
Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT.
