The Golden Knights enter the second leg of this back-to-back feeling confident in themselves. Their dominant 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday was their most convincing performance in about a month, and the team hopes to use that momentum to come home with four more points in their pockets.
In order for the Golden Knights to accomplish this goal, here are a few storylines to pay attention to.
The Golden Knights seemed to find their game against the Blues, with just about every aspect shining at some point.
Now, it becomes a matter of building on those positive aspects and seizing momentum. That means the Golden Knights have to remain aggressive in all three phases, making simple but effective plays, and taking advantage of opportunities that come their way. Do this, and the Golden Knights will return to Vegas back on the upswing.
Something that has started to re-emerge over the last few games has been the Golden Knights’ willingness to take shots and get pucks closer to the net.
That shift has paid off in spades over the past couple of games, with four players (Shea Theodore, Brandon Saad, Braeden Bowman, Noah Hanifin) all scoring their first goals on the year. The success against St. Louis should result in more confidence in the Golden Knights that they can score at any time. The Wild should offer a more stern test defensively, but the Golden Knights swept the season series last year, so they know what to expect by now.
On the other side, the Wild have been stewing for the last seven months for a chance at revenge against their playoff nemesis.
Top stars such as Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy helped the Wild get the Golden Knights on the ropes, but far too many of their teammates went cold at the wrong times. Both players are already past the 20-point mark this season, so it is clear to see that nothing has changed too drastically since that time. The Golden Knights have seen just how much of a difference the Wild’s best players can make when they get going, so doubling their defensive efforts whenever either one touches the ice will be critical.
