Matthew Schaefer has been off to an amazing start to his career, and after an OT winner against Utah, he has surpassed a long standing record set by Sidney Crosby.
The New York Islanders won the lottery this season when they moved up to the No. 1 spot in the 2025 NHL Draft, and in that position, they landed star defenseman Matthew Schaefer, whom they hoped could become a star.
Early in his career, he’s proven that he’s already a superstar at just 18-years of age, as he has posted 7 goals and 15 points just 18 games into his rookie campaign for the Islanders.
Schaefer passes a long standing Sidney Crosby record on Friday
Unsurprisingly, that red-hot start to his career comes with some history, and on Friday he made more when he ripped the OT winner past Karel Vejmelka to pick up the 3-2 victory, giving the Islanders four straight wins.
It continues the ridiculous start Schaefer has had to his career as he has completely re-energized things in New York, and in doing so, he surpassed Sidney Crosby as the youngest player in NHL history with an OT winner at 18-years and 70 days, with Crosby netting his first at 18-years and 101 days.
At this point, there’s simply no signs of the No. 1 overall pick slowing down or hitting a wall early in his NHL career, and with this Islanders team rallying around him to plenty of success with a 10-6-2 record through 18 games, he may just have enough talent to will them into the Stanley Cup Playoffs against all odds this season.
