The Original Six rivals of the Detroit Red Wings, the Brad Treliving-led Toronto Maple Leafs, have claimed defenseman Troy Stecher off waivers.
This is a bad look for Troy Stecher, as this will be his fifth NHL team he’s played for since he exited the Red Wings organization.
For GM Brad Treliving, the waiver claim of ex-Red Wings defenseman Troy Stecher is to piece together a busted blue line that’s missing Chris Tanev, who’s injured.
Though after last night’s action in the United Center, we’re not sure what it will take to turn the tide around.
Stecher, a 31-year-old defenseman and 566-game veteran of the NHL, has only appeared in six games for the Oilers this season before being cut loose by GM Stan Bowman.
Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Troy Stecher Joins His Fifth NHL Team on Sunday
The 5-foot-10, 184-pound defenseman played with the Red Wings during the 2020-22 NHL season. He’d suit up for 60 games in Detroit and score 13 points (4-9), with a -19.
The Red Wings dealt him to the Los Angeles Kings afterward at 2022’s trade deadline for a seventh-round draft pick.
Stecher wouldn’t last long, playing only 13 games under the Kings’ Todd McLellan.
He’s played with the Arizona Coyotes (two stints), Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames since his exit from the Red Wings.
Stecher comes at a bargain price of $787K AAV and will be a substitute for Chris Tanev, who is out injury.
Will Toronto be his forever home, or will he yet again be another hired gun?
