MECHANICSBURG — The defense knew it was coming. At what moment and in what scenario was the question.
A skim of Warwick field hockey film, and one play pops off the page. Senior Calli Martin was always the supplier.
In her four seasons with the Warriors, Martin’s aerial from the near side of a corner insert became her trademark. Warwick whipped out the call at least once a game. And chances were if it missed the first time, the team was going to revisit.
While the Warriors dropped a 3-2 decision to Palmyra in Saturday’s PIAA Class 2A final at Cumberland Valley, Martin’s signature capped the Warwick scoring. It was a fitting curtain call, a tip of the cap to the standout that poured four years of sacrifice into revitalizing the program.
Martin didn’t score on the aerial. Instead, she assisted Elena Care, as the sophomore collected the bat down from the Cougars goalie and punched in the then-equalizer from point-blank range.
“It was pretty cool, considering they know it’s coming,” Martin said of the sequence. “That’s how we scored on them last year in the (PIAA) semifinals. So they know how to cover it, and they always block it. So it was great for Elena to get there.”

One play became Martin’s coat of arms, but it was just a snippet of the Warriors’ jack-of-all-trades. Martin is committed to Christopher Newport, one of the top Division III programs in the country. Warwick coach Ron Stief regards Martin as one of the best stick-skill players at the high school level.
If Martin wasn’t angling for the back of the cage, she was finding the outlet to help a teammate score. She finished her swan song with 18 assists and 13 goals.
“I think we’ve grown our team closer together, and I’d say we were younger this year,” Martin said. “So our connection was really good, and I think that’s what stuck with us the whole season.”
Martin is one of five seniors who will depart the Warwick program. She started her career with a sub-.500 record and helped the Warriors blossom into back-to-back state finalists.
Warwick lifted the 2024 PIAA and District Three trophies. Martin revived relevance, having been a part of the 2022 squad that advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in 12 years.
The aerial held chapters in the longform feature.
“(Making) back-to-back (state final appearances), that’s been a really cool experience,” Martin said. “I think that’s keeping the legacy of Warwick field hockey. And I hope the next group can do it, too.”
Opposing defenses knew the handful that awaited with Warwick. They knew Martin, at some point, was going to unveil her signature.
But even with prior knowledge, few were prepared. That’s what made the play, and Martin, pop off the page.
“My team, we’re all encouraging,” Martin said of what kept her going. “So what’s great is even if you’re having a bad day, you know everyone’s there for you, everyone’s there for each other. So it just all comes together.”
