NEW YORK • A rising hockey star with Miramichi roots has scored the first hat trick of his National Hockey League career.

Nashville Predators forward Matthew Wood, whose father Jamie is from Miramichi, recorded all three Nashville goals in the Predators’ 6-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 10 at Madison Square Garden.

Since being called up from the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals on Oct. 23, the 20-year-old winger from Nanaimo, B.C., has 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 13 games. He was held off the scoresheet over the weekend as the Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins faced off in the two-game 2025 NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden.
