Berube told reporters a few days after the injury that Matthews was expected to miss about a week.

Matthews, who missed significant time last season with a upper-body injury, joins a growing list of injured players on the Maple Leafs, including defencemen Chris Tanev (upper-body) and Brandon Carlo (lower-body), goalie Anthony Stolarz (upper-body) and centre Scott Laughton (upper-body), who are all currently on the injured reserve.

Berube also announced Monday that centre Nicolas Roy will miss Tuesday’s game against the visiting St. Louis Blues with an upper-body injury.

The 28-year-old Matthews has tallied nine goals and five assists over 17 games, his 10th year in the NHL after the Leafs selected him first overall in 2016.

Including overtime, the Maple Leafs have dropped five straight games and sit second-last in the Atlantic Division with an 8-9-2 record.
