The New Jersey Devils are calling up reinforcements from the American Hockey League as of Monday morning.
The Devils announced they’ve placed Cody Glass on injured reserve, retroactive to November 12th. Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained Glass is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. The Devils center was injured against the Chicago Blackhawks, when he lost an edge amid a puck battle, and slammed into the boards behind New Jersey’s net.
In a corresponding move, the Devils have recalled defenseman, Ethan Edwards, from the Utica Comets.
Edwards, 23, put forth a strong showing in training camp and won over Keefe as a believer in the defenseman.
In fact, amid Luke Hughes‘ contract holdout, Keefe went as far as to say that Edwards might have been the direct Luke replacement had an extension not been sorted by the beginning of the regular season.
However, Luke signed the dotted line, and was, in fact, available for Game One with the Devils.
Edwards made his professional hockey debut in the 2024-25 season with the Comets, registering three assists in 10 games. He made his way to the AHL after the Michigan Wolverines season ended in the NCAA. In 36 games in his final college season, he recorded five goals and 21 points.
This season, Edwards is one of Utica’s top blueliners. In 13 games, he’s recorded a goal and five points. He’s less known for his offensive metrics, and more known for his defensive prowess and booming checks.
However, Edwards is an elite skater, which allows him to fluently transition the puck from one end of the ice to the other.
The Devils are back in New Jersey on Monday before they set out for the second half of their road trip where they face the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and Philadelphia Flyers on the road.
New Jersey would have carried just six defensemen, thus, Edwards is certainly insurance on the trip. It appears as though Dougie Hamilton‘s status is in question for at least the next three games.
It is currently unknown if he will make his NHL debut.
