A National Hockey League insider has revealed one big reason why forward David Kampf chose to sign with the Vancouver Canucks after becoming a UFA last week.As Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik continued his search for center help, David Kampf’s name popped up on the free agent market after having his contract terminated by the Toronto Maple Leafs and over the weekend, the two sides agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth $1.1 million USD.”David is a very reliable two-way centre who will improve our strength and depth down the middle immediately. He is good in the faceoff dot and is a solid penalty killer, two areas of need we currently have on our team. His hockey IQ is also a big asset and we believe he will fit in nicely with our group.” Patrik Allvin said.
By coming to the Vancouver Canucks, Kampf gets a chance to play in the National Hockey League again, while also appearing on their penalty kill, but it looks like he has his sights set on a big opportunity in early 2026.

While making an appearance on Donnie & Dhali on Monday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman shared that David Kampf wants an opportunity to represent Czechia at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and by being in Vancouver, it’ll increase his chances.
Friedman added that he believes the Jirkov, Czechia native was worried about not making the Olympic roster because he was in the American Hockey League.
Kampf has represented his nation on several occasions including three of the last four IIHF World Championships, helping Czechia win the gold medal on home ice in 2024, their first in nearly a decade-and-a-half.
Now that Kampf is back in the National Hockey League, he’ll have a bit of a runway here to show Czechia’s management that he belongs on their Olympic roster, which is set to be announced at some point in early January, a little over a month before puck drops on the tournament in Milan.
The 30-year-old may also be joined by a pair of his new teammates – forward Filip Chytil and defenseman Filip Hronek, with the latter almost guaranteed a spot on the roster and will likely be on their top pairing, while the former’s participation will depend on his health.
