Former Vancouver Canucks Fan Favourite Signs Multi-Year Extension After a Lack of NHL Interest

A former Vancouver Canucks forward has put pen-to-paper on a new multi-year contract extension to remain overseas in Europe after a strong start to the season.
The 2025-26 season has been underway across Europe for two months now including in several of the top leagues including the SHL in Sweden, Liiga in Finland, National League in Switzerland, DEL in Germany, etc., all of which feature former Vancouver Canucks.

In a post on their official website on Tuesday, Geneve-Servette HC of Switzerland’s National League announced that they’ve agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with former Vancouver Canucks forward Markus Granlund, keeping the Finnish forward at the club through the 2027-28 campaign.Note: the quotes in this story are translated from French
“We are delighted that Markus, one of the best players in the National League, is staying with us. Thanks to his exceptional hockey IQ, skills, and anticipation, he has been one of the league’s top scorers since arriving in Geneva. Furthermore, thanks to his extensive experience and interpersonal skills, he has also become an important member of our team off the ice.” Geneve-Servette HC Sports Manager Marc Gautschi said.
Granlund, a native of Oulu, Finland, is having an incredible season thus far for Geneve-Servette HC as he’s registered 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists), eight penalty minutes and is a plus-four in 21 games.
“I’m really very happy to be able to continue playing for Genève-Servette. I love the city and the club, it was important for me to be able to stay here. I believe in this project and I’m looking forward to more adventures with GSHC.” Granlund said.
The 32-year-old center appeared in over 200 games with the Vancouver Canucks across parts of four seasons after being acquired by the club in a trade with the Calgary Flames in February 2016 for Hunter Shinkaruk.
After the 2019-20 season, which he spent with the Edmonton Oilers and their AHL affiliate, Granlund headed to Europe where he played in the KHL with Salavat Yulayev Ufa and in Switzerland with HC Lugano & now, Geneve-Servette HC.
