The Vancouver Canucks have missed out on a chance to land a former first round pick after he was claimed off waivers by one of their rivals on Tuesday morning.

While the additions of Lukas Reichel and David Kampf are nice and certainly help from a depth perspective, the Vancouver Canucks are expected to continue to remain aggressive on the trade market in the days and weeks ahead and on Monday, has another opportunity to add to their roster, this time through the waiver wire.

Vancouver Canucks miss out on former first round pick on NHL’s waiver wire

On Monday morning, the Boston Bruins announced that they were placing former first round pick John Beecher on waivers in order to assign him to the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins.

While on Donnie & Dhali on Monday, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman shared that two teams who could be in the mix for John Beecher were the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, both of whom have been quite active in the center market.

“Montreal is looking for a centre and I don’t think I would be surprised if Vancouver checked in on him.” Friedman said according to Rick Dhaliwal.

Given Beecher’s age and potential, there was no chance he was going to clear waivers and be assigned to the American Hockey League by the Bruins and in fact, he ended up being claimed by the first team on the NHL’s waiver list.

In a post on social media just after 11 a.m. PT, the Calgary Flames announced that they’ve claimed John Beecher off waivers from the Boston Bruins.

“The #Flames have claimed forward John Beecher off of waivers from the Boston Bruins.

Welcome to the C of Red, John!” the Flames said.

Beecher, a native of Elmira, New York, has 136 games of NHL experience under his belt from his time with the Boston Bruins and has registered 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists), 50 penalty minutes and is a minus-16.

With the Vancouver Canucks missing out on John Beecher, Patrik Allvin will have shift his attention back to the trade market and potentially towards the Nashville Predators, with reports suggesting that they may have interest in two-time Stanley Cup champion Steven Stamkos.
