The Pittsburgh Penguins did not need to demote one to make an important recall Tuesday as the team returns to normal life following their week-long trip in Sweden for the NHL Global Series.
The team announced Ville Koivunen had been moved to injured reserve, and the team recalled former first-round pick Sam Poulin from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Poulin, 24, had a strong training camp and got off to a good start with the WBS Penguins. He has 15 points, including seven goals and 15 points in 16 games, and is a plus-8.
The 6-foot-2, 213-pound forward can play center or wing, and has overcome personal issues to resume his career in the past couple of seasons. Poulin has played in 13 NHL games, registering two assists, but has not yet scored his first NHL goal.
Koivunen struggled this season, playing 11 games with only two assists. The disappointing start including a demotion and recall to WBS, following his strong end to last season, in which he notched seven assists in the final eight NHL regular-season games.
