We’ve known that the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers will be playing in the NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2, and now we know what they’ll be wearing inside Miami’s LoanDepot Park for the first outdoor game in Florida.
On Wednesday, the NHL and its uniform partner, Fanatics, dropped the jerseys that the Panthers and Rangers will don. And if outdoor hockey in Florida would have seemed a bit too futuristic even a few years ago, the jerseys for the Sunshine State’s outdoor game have a throwback feel.

The Panthers’ jersey is a nod to the original ones from the 1993-94 season. It features a familiar color scheme, and Dom Fillion of Fanatics told NHL.com that Florida’s trademark Leaping Panther logo was reinvented. Another feature is the stitching on the logo and piping, which resemble those found on jerseys worn by a hockey team from the 1950s.
Fillion said subtle elements on the jersey also highlight Florida’s military history. Additionally, there is a rat Easter egg as an homage to the rubber rats tossed onto the ice by Panthers fans after a postseason win.
With the Panthers’ jersey essentially being created as an original, the one worn by the Rangers was made to complement the alternate jerseys New York is wearing for its centennial season. The words “New York” appear diagonally across the jersey’s white front. A stylized apple patch is used because New York is known as The Big Apple.

When the Winter Classic debuted in Orchard Park, N.Y., on Jan. 1, 2008, the concept was an idea that not everybody in the NHL was sure would work. That game’s success — due in part to the snow globe imagery and Sidney Crosby’s winning score in the shootout — sparked what has become the league’s signature regular-season event. Teams wearing themed jerseys became a big part of the equation that made the Winter Classic a winner for the league.
