The Columbus Blue Jackets social media team clearly did not appreciate the team’s recent negative appearance in a The Bill Simmons Podcast segment.
Bill Simmons, sportswriter and founder of The Ringer, has his fans and detractors, but there’s no doubt that he’s shaped the sports media landscape over the years. And his podcast, The Bill Simmons Podcast, is one of the biggest sports podcasts in the United States. On a segment during the latest The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons answered a mailbag question asking which franchise is the most irrelevant in professional sports.
His answer? The Blue Jackets.
Simmons then outlined his case over a two-minute segment listing off the Blue Jackets’ woes since becoming a NHL franchise in 2000.
Simmons does get a few things wrong in his segment. The Blue Jackets have won two playoff rounds (2019, 2020) in their history and didn’t sweep the Florida Panthers, but in fact the Tampa Bay Lightning, back in 2019. Plus, the tragic deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and Matiss Kivlenieks in recent years have definitely hit the team hard.
Still, as of late, the Blue Jackets have not been a successful NHL team even though the franchise does have some bright up-and-coming star players.
Unfortunately, however, the Blue Jackets social media team decided to involve themselves in the matter by responding to Awful Announcing’s tweet of their story on Simmons’ comment. And in the tweet, the Blue Jackets made reference to Simmons’ long-shuttered sports website Grantland that closed back in 2015 in what was a stunning move from ESPN at the time.
Grantland had its issues as a publication, but overall was widely respected by the sports media landscape as a whole over its four-year run. It’s definitely a low blow for the Blue Jackets to call that out in a clap back, but it’s also a perplexing one considering Simmons has had massive success with The Ringer, HBO and Spotify in the years since.
This definitely feels like a bit of the Streisand effect in action here by the Blue Jackets social media team, as the comment definitely wasn’t the sick burn they thought it would be.
