The young man from Long Lake recently spent a day with Minnesota’s NHL team, signing a one-day contract and meeting players, including Sidney Crosby.
LONG LAKE, Minn. — Less than a month after achieving his dream of signing a one-day contract with the Minnesota Wild, 10-year-old Weston died peacefully while watching a hockey game Tuesday night. Â
Weston, a hockey fanatic from Long Lake, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in early January. According to his GoFundMe site, he underwent intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy for 10 days, then spent a month in the hospital to allow his immune system to recover. Â
The child’s mom, Danielle Paszkiewicz, posted on Weston’s CaringBridge site late Tuesday, announcing that Weston woke up with little strength and confusion. His condition slipped during the day, and the boy’s hospice nurse took steps to make him comfortable.Â
Weston was surrounded by his extended family and was watching hockey on television when he passed.Â
“He was reminded that he is surrounded by such an amazing family who will drop anything to come see him,” Danielle Paszkiewicz wrote. “We will keep this short as it has been a long day that still does not seem real. Weston, you are the most courageous, strong, resilient, incredible person ever and we love you forever.”
“Sleep tight Weston, everyone loves you so much!”
The Wild paid tribute to their young hockey fan on X. “He was such a courageous young man that will be greatly missed by everyone that had the opportunity to know him. Our hearts are with his family and friends, and all those that were impacted by Weston’s brave fight.”

Weston spent a day at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on Oct. 30 through Make-A-Wish. He signed a one-day contract with team General Manager Billy Guerin, joined the team for a morning skate, and planted the Wild flag at center ice. Although the Wild lost to Pittsburgh, he was invited into the Penguins’ locker room and got to meet the team, including superstar Sidney Crosby. He even got to wear the team’s ‘player of the game’ helmet.Â

On November 16, the club sent Weston and his family a block of tickets and a suite to take in the Wild’s game against Vegas.Â
A number of social media posts honored the boy, including one from the Long Lake Fire Department, where Weston’s dad, John, is a firefighter.Â
Anyone who would like to donate to Weston’s family as they prepare for his funeral and medical bills can do so at a GoFundMe account set up for them.Â
