The 32-year-old centre surpassed former captain Blake Wheeler as the franchise’s new career games played leader with 898 games. Wheeler’s 897th game with the Jets was Apr. 27, 2023 against the Vegas Golden Knights.

“I’ve been here for a long time, so I feel old some days,” Scheifele said following the team’s 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday evening. “But it’s a tremendous honour.”

With Shoot to Thrill by AC/DC cranking through the house sound system, the Jets acknowledged the milestone with a short tribute during a first-period stoppage in play. Scheifele also earned first-star honours. The Jets drafted the former Barrie Colts star with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft.

With every passing game, Scheifele has earned every individual strand of grey hair that accompanies the setting of franchise records. Head coach Scott Arniel, who has way more grey hair than his top centre, says the record is a testament to his durability, adaptability and sheer talent.

“That (record is special),” Arniel said. “To be able to stay healthy, the other side is that he’s an elite athlete. He takes a lot of pride in his body so that he can play close to 82 games every year. We know all the other stats have been building with his offence, but I don’t think he ever, I mean, he’s getting the recognition. I think people are really starting to recognize there’s a really good hockey player in Winnipeg.”

Scheifele joined the Jets in a full-time capacity at the start of the 2013-14 season. The fewest regular-season games he played was 56, but that was during the COVID year, when the regular season was 56 games in length. Not including this year, Scheifele has missed only nine regular-season games in the previous three seasons.

He also added three points to his Jets 2.0 career points leader status with three helpers in the three-goal win over the Blue Jackets.

The Kitchener, Ont., native set up Josh Morrissey with a sublime back-door pass at 1:12 of the second period. Scheifele later added a helper on Kyle Connor’s goal that doinked off the mask of Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins at 2:45 of the third period, and a third assist on Logan Stanley’s blast from near the top of the right face-off circle at 6:23 of the final stanza. Scheifele has 347 goals and 484 assists for career 831 points. In 19 games played this season, he has 11 goals and 16 assists.

“It is an awesome accomplishment,” Connor said. “He’s been a pillar for this organization for a long time. One of the first draft picks here, even my first couple years and just being a mentor to so many guys. And he leads by example. He’s also a vocal, caring guy. He bleeds Winnipeg Jet hockey. He wears his heart on his sleeve every time he steps on the ice. It is a cool accomplishment to have that record.”
