Former Vancouver Canucks Defenseman Finally Finds New Home After Suddenly Becoming a UFA

A former Vancouver Canucks defenseman is set to return to the ice this week after finding his new home nearly five months after becoming an unrestricted free agent.
After winning their first-ever Calder Cup last season, the Abbotsford Canucks have seen a ton of change over the past five months and unfortunately, it’s hurt the club as they sit last in the Western Conference with a 3-11-0-2 record through 16 games.
This week, another member of Abbotsford’s 2025 Calder Cup-winning team has found himself a new home, albeit temporarily on a professional tryout (PTO).
Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman signs PTO five months after becoming free agent
In a press release on Thursday morning, the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins, affiliate of the Boston Bruins, announced that they’ve signed former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Christian Wolanin to a professional tryout.
“Providence Bruins General Manager Evan Gold announced today, November 20, that the Providence Bruins have signed defenseman Christian Wolanin and forward Shawn Element to professional tryouts and recalled forward Jacob Perreault from the Maine Mariners.” the club said.
Wolanin, a native of Quebec City, Quebec, joined the Vancouver Canucks organization in the summer of 2022 as an unrestricted free agent and went on to appear in 16 games with the big club during the ’22-23 campaign, registering three assists, four penalty minutes and was a plus-five.
After his 16 games with Vancouver, he never appeared in an NHL game for them again, spending the following two seasons in the American Hockey League with Abbotsford, putting up 124 points across parts of three campaigns with them.
It was a bit of a surprise to many that it took this long for Christian Wolanin to find a new landing spot, especially considering he finished 15th in points by a defenseman last season.
“Finally Christian Wolanin is back on a roster. Providence has signed him to a PTO.
He was named the AHL’s top d-man in 2022-23. Last season he won the Calder Cup with Abbotsford and was excellent in the postseason.”
The Providence Bruins are set for a back-to-back at home this weekend against Lehigh Valley and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, so there’s a good chance Christian Wolanin could make his debut with the club very soon.
