It’s no secret that the Montreal Canadiens want to add a little depth to the mix, as they once again navigate the choppy injury waters.
The Habs did not get a chance to claim John Beecher from the Boston Bruins, as the Calgary Flames were given priority, and immediately plucked the left-handed centre off waivers.

Montreal Canadiens Waivers Option
On Thursday, St. Louis Blues forward Alexandre Texier was placed on waivers, a situation that is likely to garner some interest from Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes.
Texier, 30, has just one assist in eight games for the struggling Blues, spending most of his shifts serving as a left-winger.
Ideally, the Habs would be able to land a centre on waivers, but Texier being added to the waiver wire is interesting, as he was linked to the Montreal Canadiens by Elliotte Friedman in his latest edition of 32 Thoughts.
Friedman suggested Texier may follow the same route as David Kampf, in the bid to sign a new contract.

“Less than one week after David Kampf terminated his contract to stay in the NHL at a lower salary, there are rumours that Alexandre Texier is considering the same,” explained Friedman. “He has played only one game for St. Louis since Oct. 28 and is making $2.1 million.
“Would Texier make any sense for Montreal? The Canadiens are looking to plug injury holes. The standings are tight, so few white flags are waving.”
With that in mind, the Habs are presented with two options.
They can attempt a waiver claim for Texier, and add $2.1 million cap hit to the books, or they can wait to see if the situation sours a little further, which could lead to a mutually agreed contract termination.

At that point, the Canadiens could negotiate a brand-new deal, with a much more reasonable annual average value for a player who will essentially serve as a contingency plan.
