More than $13 million is being spread across Western New York communities to replace lead service water lines.

It’s an initiative by New York to improve drinking water infrastructure.

“Protecting the health and safety of New Yorkers is my number one priority — that’s why we’re investing in grants across the state so that communities can make the critical improvements they need,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “Every family deserves clean, safe drinking water, and these grants will help us make that goal a reality.”

The city of Lockport will get more than $10 million, while the city of Buffalo will receive more than $3 million.

Gloversville, Mohawk Valley Water Authority, New York City (areas of the Bronx and Brooklyn), Oswego, Poughkeepsie and Rochester will also receive funding.

To date, New York has allocated $23 million thought the Lead Service Line Replacement Program to replace 3,574 lead service lines in New York.
