A Detroit Red Wings prospect helped push the U.S. to overtime to claim some much-needed points at the World Championship, and a Red Wings regular helped his country dominate.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, fresh off recording an assist in his 2025 debut at the elite international tournament, added a pair of helpers May 14 in his native Norway’s match against the Americans.

In later action, Lucas Raymond was among the scorers as his native Sweden walloped Latvia, 6-0. Raymond also had an assist as Sweden moved into first place in Group A.

In Group B action, the U.S. needed overtime to prevail, 6-5, at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark. That put the U.S. in third place at the event that runs through May 25 in Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden.
The Wings selected Brandsegg-Nygård (6 feet 1, 207 pounds) at No. 15 in last summer’s draft. He played in 2024-25 for Skellefteå in the Swedish Hockey League, joining the Grand Rapids Griffins in mid-April after his Swedish club was eliminated from their playoffs.

Brandsegg-Nygård assisted on Norway’s first goal, in the first period. He was also on the ice late in the third period to set up a second goal in the final couple minutes of the third period, which forced the game into an extra period. That kind of poise under tremendous pressure is a terrific sign for the Wings, who see Brandsegg-Nygård as a key part of the rebuild.
Brandsegg-Nygård has three points in two games at the 2025 World Championship.
