Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen was fined $2,000 on Friday for a second offence of NHL Rule 64 (Diving/Embellishment).

The NHL said Rantanen previously received a warning for his first offence of the rule following an incident on Oct. 16 against the Vancouver Canucks.

The incident that triggered the fine took place in the third period of a game against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 11.

A third offence will result in a fine of $3,000, while a fourth would be $4,000. Incidents No. 5 and beyond would result in a $5,000 fine for each offence. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

NHL Rule 64 is designed to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties.
