A shaky first quarter of the season raised some questions about the Golden Knights, but a 2-0-1 record in the last three games gives Vegas fans plenty of room for optimism. On the other side, the Mammoth are in a bit of a tailspin after a hot start, only winning twice in their last 10 games. With a quick three-game road trip before Thanksgiving, the Golden Knights look to return home in much greater spirits.
Here is how the Golden Knights can ensure that momentum does not shift the other way in this matchup
After an almost team-wide cold spell, players are starting to pick things up as November rolls along.
The power play has come to life with five goals in the last three games, with Braeden Bowman scoring both of his first goals with the man advantage. Tomas Hertl (three goals, six points) and Shea Theodore (two goals, four points) have also started to get things going over the last five games. Not only do the Golden Knights hope those runs continue but, if they extend to the likes of Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner, they will become all that more difficult to stop.
For all the talk about puck management plaguing the Golden Knights at times, the Mammoth have been worse off in that department.
The Mammoth currently lead the NHL with 18.2 giveaways per game, which should lead to some juicy opportunities for the Golden Knights to exploit. Not only has Vegas traditionally played a smart defensive game, but they have players who can be devastating on the rush. A player like Marner, who can punish errant passes and take them all the way to the other end of the ice, should have plenty of opportunities to make impact plays.
This first tussle with the Mammoth actually marks one of the quirkier moments in the Golden Knights’ schedule this season.
The current three-game road trip consists of two trips to Utah, sandwiching a Saturday matchup against the Pacific-leading Anaheim Ducks. It is difficult to believe that either team will change drastically within a week after facing one another, so this is a great chance for the Golden Knights to see how the Mammoth play and what they can do to counter it. Win or lose, it is crucial for head coach Bruce Cassidy to find ways to attack the Mammoth in preparation for the next time the two teams face off.
