In a year that has been defined by just how far Alex Ovechkin can stretch the limits of greatness, the 40-year-old climbed a couple more lists during Thursday’s victory. The Washington Capitals won their second game in a row after scoring 15 goals across the two contests, heavily aided by his play.
Ovechkin Tallies Regular Season Hat Trick No. 33
The Capitals forward is no stranger to accomplishing the feat of scoring three goals in a single game, a capability that was on full display against the Montreal Canadiens. Ovechkin opened the scoring before adding on two late goals to help seal the win for Washington, marking their second straight game with seven or more goals scored.Â
With that hat trick, Ovechkin tied Brett Hull for the fourth most in NHL history; the names on that list are synonymous with greatness, much like Ovechkin will be when it’s all said and done. The hat trick was also part of the 33rd four-point performance of his career, tying him with Nikita Kucherov for the third-most by an active player. The only players with more are Sidney Crosby (43) and Connor McDavid (41).
