Andrei Svechnikov sent Ehlers’ cross-ice pass into the back of the net at 3:19 of the third period before Eric Comrie could cover the distance across the crease.

Ehlers returned to Winnipeg for the first time since he signed a free-agent deal with the Hurricanes on July 3.
Gabe Vilardi scored 54 seconds later to cut the deficit to one, but the Hurricanes held on, despite a late penalty to K’Andre Miller at 19:08. Vilardi scored twice for the Jets.
Comrie will get the majority of the work for the next four to six weeks as Connor Hellebuyck is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Saturday. The Jets called up Thomas Milic from the Manitoba Moose to back up Comrie. Comrie turned aside 24 of 28 shots.
Josh Morrissey also scored for the Jets. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Winnipeg.

Jordan Staal scored twice for the Hurricanes. Seth Jarvis also scored. The ‘Canes improve to 8-3-0 on the road 10-2-0 when they score first and 11-0-0 when leading after two periods of play.
Carolina backup Brandon Bussi earned up his fifth win of the season, stopping 24 of 27 shots. Bussi has won three straight games.
The Jets host the Minnesota Wild on Sunday afternoon.

NOT AN IDEAL START
The Comrie era didn’t get off to a roaring start as the Jets’ new No. 1 netminder had the first shot of the game beat him high to the blocker side just 16 seconds into the game. Comrie was thrust into the top dog spot on Friday morning when the news broke that Connor Hellebuyck was heading for arthroscopic knee surgery. Hellebuyck is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Thomas Milic was recalled from the Manitoba Moose in a corresponding move to the Hellebuyck news. Jets head coach Scott Arniel said the knee procedure is scheduled for Saturday.

ALMOST FOR EHLERSÂ
During a stoppage at 7:43 of the first period, the Jets posted a video tribute to Nikolaj Ehlers. The former Winnipeg winger, known as ‘Fly’ to his ex-teammates, skated to centre and raised his stick in acknowledgement, the crowd giving him a warm welcome. Not long after, Ehlers had a glorious chance to score against his former mates, but Dylan DeMelo spoiled the moment. Comrie stopped the original point-blank shot, but the puck squeezed through the Jets netminder and appeared destined for the back of the net, but DeMelo skated into the crease and batted the puck out of mid-air and into the corner to the right of the cage.
NUMBER ONE
For the first time this season, the Jets allowed a short-handed goal at 6:31 of the second period when Jarvis buried a rebound after Comrie stopped Sebastian Aho on a breakaway. Miller blocked a Kyle Connor entry at the Carolina blue line, Aho picking up the puck in the neutral zone and beating Morrissey to the net. Comire made the save on the original chance, but Jarvis was uncovered and scooped the rebound into the net for his 11th goal of the season.
