The Edmonton Oilers may be looking to a roster shake-up to get out of their slow start, and claiming a forward off waivers could be a possibility.
Top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested the Oilers are looking into a shake up move, and calling up physical forward Connor Clattenburg could be a consideration. Now they’ve got another option on waivers.
Oilers insider suggests team is looking at waiver claim from Buffalo Sabres
Today the Buffalo Sabres placed 30 year old left winger Mason Geertsen on waivers, an under the radar move for a depth player.
Edmonton Journal insider Jim Matheson suggested the Oilers could place a claim on Geertsen to give the team a physical presence in their bottom six.
Geertsen played 3 seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings and is a local product from Drayton Valley, Alberta. Those few personal connections could give him an in to being claimed by Edmonton.
While it may be worth consideration, Geertsen isn’t a player who’s going to significantly sway the tides for the Oilers. At 30 years old he has only 30 NHL games of experience with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. For most of his career, he’s toiled in the minors.
But at 6’4, 231 pounds, and a mean streak in him – Geertsen would bring an element the Oilers don’t have in their bottom six. Looking like a team in need of some energy, a big bruiser might give the spark they need.
We’ll see if the Oilers decide to place the claim tomorrow afternoon as waivers information is released. If the Oilers do make a claim, they’ll have to send a player off their current roster.
