Could GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings tap into the AHL to solve their goaltending woes exacerbated by John Gibson?

John Gibson has been terrible to start the year for the Red Wings, with a 4-6 record and an .870 save percentage.

He would be shut out by the New York Islanders, giving up 5 goals on 26 shots this season.

If the Red Wings are to maintain their spot in the Atlantic and aim for the playoffs, the team will need to fortify the crease with someone better and someone younger.

Cossa is a 6-foot-6 goalie who was drafted in the first round in 2021.

Since he’s returned from injury, he’s been on fire, leading the AHL with a 1.60 GAA and a .940 save percentage.

His season statistics are great in 2025-26, with a record of 5-1-0 and a .942 save percentage this season.

Cossa’s play has been instrumental in the Griffins’ maintaining their win streak, while his dominant play in the crease is a signifier that he deserves another look in the NHL.

There may be unintended consequences with a recall of Cossa to the net, as the team will have to figure out what to do with Gibson, whether he will be a regular healthy scratch or become the team’s third goalie.

A trade might be more difficult at the moment, given the sizable sum he’s paid ($6.4 million AAV), and the Red Wings would have to involve a third team in order to facilitate one.
