The Avalanche and Predators will become familiar with each other over the next few weeks. Saturday’s matchup between the two clubs is the first of three over the next three weeks, which will make up 25% of Colorado’s next 12 games.

It’s hard to find two clubs going in more opposite directions than these two. Nashville is 31st in the NHL, ahead of only Calgary. But unlike the Flames, the Preds don’t have the same level of young talent in the lineup or pipeline. Instead, their roster is loaded with veterans on long-term deals who are either on the back end of their careers or struggling to mesh.

Steven Stamkos hasn’t been a good fit, nor have Brady Skjei and Jonathan Marchessault. Their top center, Ryan O’Reilly, is rumored to be on the move at some point this season, and Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi aren’t getting any younger.

The Preds have two wins in their last 10 and are the only team in the NHL not to have reached 50 goals (they have 49).

Nashville is getting Josi back in the lineup after a month’s absence.

Meanwhile in Colorado, Nathan MacKinnon is the early Hart Trophy favorite, Cale Makar looks like he wants to defend his reigning Norris Trophy, Martin Necas is off to an insane start, Scott Wedgewood might be the best story among all goalies, and the Avs have just one regulation loss in 20 games.

On top of that, Colorado’s 84 goals are No. 1 in the league and the 48 goals the team has allowed is also the lowest.

The Avs will be without Gavin Brindley, who suffered a lower-body injury at Ball Arena on Thursday. Head coach Jared Bednar said on Friday that Brindley would not be on this trip as he’s being re-evaluated. The team called up Jason Polin to dress in his place.

In goal, Colorado is going with Mackenzie Blackwood, who will make his fourth start this season. Blackwood has won his last two starts and is 2-0-1. He’ll go up against Nashville’s usual starter Juuse Saros.

The Avs’ struggling power play is still perhaps the one thing they need to clean up. Gabe Landeskog is getting promoted to the top unit in place of Victor Olofsson.
