DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings’ chances looked bleak trailing by two goals midway through the third period Saturday.
But a spirited comeback capped by Alex DeBrincat’s goal at 1:50 of overtime lifted them to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings responded following Thursday’s dreadful 5-0 loss the New York Islanders and improved to 13-8-1. The Blue Jackets dropped to 11-8-3.
Cam Talbot made 30 saves to improve to 9-2-0.
DeBrincat scored against Jet Greaves by finding a small opening on the short side between the goaltender and the post. It was his 10th goal the season and 13th OT tally of his career.
Defensemen Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider scored 3:02 apart midway through the third period to tie it at 3-3.
Chiarot fired in a loose puck at 10:23 for his second of the season. Seider scored at 13:25, two seconds after a power play expired and moments after Talbot stopped Sean Monahan on a shorthanded breakaway after Axel Sandin-Pellikka stumbled in the offensive zone.
Zach Werenski had given the Blue Jackets a 3-1 lead at 8:38 of the period.
Lucas Raymond tied it at 1-1 36 seconds into the second period, whipping in a backhand shot past Greaves. Ivan Provorov’s clearing attempt hit linesman Tyson Baker, who remained standing on the faceoff dot seconds after the draw. Raymond collected the puck and made an inside-outside move on Werenski before scoring his seventh goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived, as Miles Wood scored at the 54-second mark. He tipped in Denton Mateychuk’s point shot while cutting in front of the net. The Red Wings’ challenge for goalie interference on Wood, who made contact with Talbot a moment before, failed.
The Blue Jackets led 1-0 after one period on Adam Fantilli’s goal at 13:18 during a five-on-three power play. The former Michigan star fired in a shot from the faceoff circle.
The Red Wings visit the New Jersey Devils on Monday (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Extra).
