The Chicago Blackhawks unveiled their black alternates, re-launching a classic jersey that captured the hearts of the entire fanbase.

The Chicago Blackhawks may be coming off a gut-wrenching loss on Thursday to the Seattle Kraken, igniting the fanbase in a fit of rage. But, the team shared some important news that may sweeten the sour feelings of the fans.

On Friday, the Blackhawks officially unveiled their “new” black alternate jerseys, dipping back into their history to bring back the black jerseys from the 90s. Made popular in the era of Chris Chelios, Denis Savard, Jeremy Roenick, and others, the black jerseys return at a perfect time. This young group filled with exciting talent now has an iconic alternate as a part of the team’s centennial celebration.

The uniforms look exactly like they did before they entered a metaphorical hibernation. The secondary ‘C’ with tomahawks on the shoulders is complimented by the Indian head on the chest. The red and white stripes sit beautifully on the black background. To say these jerseys are beautiful is a criminal understatement.

The jerseys will be worn for seven games the remainder of the 2025-26 season. The first two dates are Black Friday weekend, with games against the Nashville Predators and Anaheim Ducks on Friday, Nov. 28 and Sunday, Nov. 30, respectfully. From there, games against the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Columbus Blue Jackets in January, and Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche in March, will feature the new alternates as well.

The Launch

The launch wasn’t as clean as the team likely hoped, with a jersey leak occurring back in October. As noted by Ben Pope in his piece for the Chicago Sun-Times, “the rollout was messy, too, since Fanatics — the NHL’s much-detested official outfitter — apparently leaked the jersey to some bloggers and influencers in October.” In addition, the original message was that the black jerseys weren’t going to conflict with the special home uniforms for the 100th season, but the team decided to go ahead with the launch anyway.

Regardless, the uniforms are the most requested jerseys in recent memory. The Blackhawks nailed it by bringing these back, and they will keep these in the rotation for at least three seasons. However, if the fan popularity remains high, they will likely stick around for much longer than that.
