The Edmonton Oilers doubled up the Florida Panthers 6-3 in their first rematch of the season, a much needed statement win after a slow start.
It was a tough ask to close out a gruelling 7-game road trip with an emotional game against the Panthers, but the Oilers showed
signs of life and were able to rise to the task.
Stuart Skinner declares Oilers win over Panthers as huge moment for team
Stuart Skinner was one of the players most on the hottest entering today’s game with the Oilers goaltending once again letting them down this season. Especially against the Panthers, he needed to have a good night.
Skinner delivered a rock-solid performance with a .921 save percentage, and recognized what a significant moment this was for the team afterward.
That is massive. It takes a lot of guts by our team here. Really long road trip, really long travel, really tough teams to play against.
That’s really important. This win was huge for us.
– Stuart Skinner
It was a huge moment for Stuart Skinner, and for the rest of the team as well. After such a panicked start, the efforts in the last three games have ticked upwards.
Coach Knoblauch appeared almost relieved in his post-game comments, much like Stuart Skinner. Getting this win can be used as fuel for this team to turn around.
Most notably, the Oilers offence was finally able to generate some high-danger chances tonight. That could be the key to solving some of their defensive issues as well – to actually play in the offensive zone.
While tonight’s gutsy win was absolutely needed, it won’t be enough to save this roster from potential changes. Insiders have revealed the management will evaluate the team and adjust their strategy if needed at the 30-game mark.
Tonight was a step in the right direction. Now finally returning home to Edmonton, the Oilers have to keep this up.
