The Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils meet in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference best-of-7, first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (TBS / truTV / Max). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Hurricanes vs. Devils odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.
Series: Hurricanes lead 2-1
The Hurricanes didn’t necessarily play poorly in Game 3 in New Jersey Friday, but they suffered a 3-2 loss in double overtime, as the team just cannot get the job done on the road.
Carolina fell behind 1-0 after Devils C Nico Hischier lit the lamp late in the first period, while C Dawson Mercer made it 2-0 early in the third. Hurricanes C Seth Jarvis finally got the visitors on the board with a power-play goal at 6:11 of the third period, with C Sebastian Aho and D Shayne Gostisbehere adding assists. Aho struck on the power play at 12:20 of the third to level the score a 2-2, and that’s how things stayed for a while.
Goalies Frederik Andersen and Jacob Markstrom went toe-to-toe in the first overtime, allowing nothing, but in the second overtime, it didn’t last long. Devils D Simon Nemec netted the game-winning goal at 2:36 of the second OT, helping the Devils make a series of it.
The ‘Canes went 16-21-4 on the road in the regular season, and they’re 0-1 on the road in these playoffs. It’s been a regular happening over the years, too, as Carolina is just 5-14 in the past 19 road playoff games.

Frederik Andersen (13-8-1, 2.50 GAA, .899 SV%, 1 SO — regular season) vs. Jacob Markstrom (26-16-6, 2.50 GAA, .900 SV%, 4 SO — regular season)
The 35-year-old Andersen made 34 saves in the Game 3 loss in New Jersey. The good news is that he allowed just 3 goals in the loss. The bad news is that he is 0-3-1 in the past 4 road starts since April 5, allowing a total of 19 goals in the span.
Markstrom allowed just 2 goals on 27 shots in Game 3, improving to 1-2-0 with a 2.08 GAA and .929 SV% in 3 starts in this series. The 35-year-old Swedish veteran has been one of the biggest reasons the Devils are still in this series.

Hurricanes at Devils picks and predictionsPrediction
Devils 3, Hurricanes 2
The DEVILS (+150) are once again the play on home ice in Game 4. Did New Jersey dominate in Game 3? No. But, it did enough. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes (37-27), which is a rarity, and they set themselves up to extend this series back to Raleigh for at least Game 5. If New Jersey can get the job done in Game 4, you never know.
The Hurricanes (-180) just haven’t given bettors any reason to trust them on the road. Until Carolina proves it can win regularly on the road, fade it away from home.
Backing the Devils +1.5 (-190) on the PL will set you back nearly 2 times the potential return. That’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward.
If you like New Jersey, just back it straight up for a much better value.
AVOID a moneyline play.
The UNDER 5.5 (-140) is a little bit on the pricey side, but it has cashed in each of the first 3 games in this series. There is no reason to believe we’re suddenly going to get fire-wagon hockey, especially as this series gets deeper.
There have been a total of 14 goals in this series so far. The winning team has averaged 3.33 goals per game (GPG), while the losing team has managed just 1.33 GPG.
Andersen has really kept a lid on the New Jersey offense, and Carolina has had 3.5 GPG in 2 wins on home ice. However, 2 of the goals for the ‘Canes were of the empty-net variety, so it isn’t like the offense is exactly humming for them, either. In addition, there have been 9 total goals in a 5-on-5 situation.
So, feel good about the Under 5.5 (-140).
