Social media has been the home for many discussions this season about the Detroit Red Wings’ need for their goalies to make the big save at the right time. There was no clearer evidence of that than Cam Talbot’s breakaway stop against Sean Monahan Saturday in Detroit’s 4-3 come-from-behind OT win versus Columbus.

Right after Talbot thwarted Monahan, Moritz Seider scored to tie the game 3-3. The Red Wings had trailed 3-1 not long before.

A lofty save percentage is great, but those key-moment saves lead to memorable seasons. Talbot knew what was at stake as soon as he saw Monahan coming at him. He had a plan.

“It would be nice if every once in a while a Red Wings goaltender would make a save they’re not supposed to make”

“Stay as patient as possible, give us a chance to win,” Talbot said. “Just get as much of my body in front of it and get a piece and with six, seven minutes left, that’s a save that you need to make. If we go down 4-2 there, game’s probably over.”

Seider skated back and gave Talbot a stick tap after scoring, saying “There, tied the game.” Talbot (9-2, 2.66 GAA) made 30 saves in the contest, none bigger than that one.

“He just said, ‘Huge save ” And it was indeed.
