This has not been the season that the Dallas Mavericks expected. They’re currently 5-13 after a home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, who were missing Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., on Saturday evening. Injuries have been a constant theme for Dallas since they traded away Luka Doncic, which is why Nico Harrison was fired a few weeks into the season.

Anthony Davis has been one of many sidelined for the Mavericks this year. Since he came over in the Doncic trade, he’s played in 14 of a possible 51 games, which has been a theme of his career. And now that Nico Harrison is gone, many expect the Mavericks to explore trades for Anthony Davis, who clearly doesn’t fit the rest of the roster.

One of the teams that may show interest is the New York Knicks, per SNY’s Ian Begley.

“This is stating the obvious, but I’m sure the Knicks would at least check in with Dallas if/when Anthony Davis becomes available,” Begley wrote. “You may scoff at the idea, but the Knicks want to win a title this season. If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, I’m sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought. But this, again, is stating the obvious. The Mavs will get calls from nearly all NBA teams if/when they make Davis available.”

What Would a Potential Knicks Trade For Anthony Davis Look Like?

I don’t expect the Mavericks to let Anthony Davis go for cheap, if they can. They realize they lost out on a lot of value from the Doncic trade, and while they’ll never be able to recoup anywhere near that value, they need to get as much as they can.

A trade with the Knicks would be difficult to pull off, as they gave up most of their tradeable firsts in the Mikal Bridges trade, and they don’t have a lot of salaries that could make it work since Davis is making $54 million this year. Even building a package around Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson leaves the Knicks WELL short, and both teams are second apron teams.

Any trade likely includes Karl-Anthony Towns going out, so is there a world where the teams swap frontcourts? A third team, like the Brooklyn Nets, would almost have to be used just to help spread out the money, and the Knicks do have a lot of second-round picks to help facilitate that.
