Maple Leafs in a very embarrassing position after the Buffalo Sabres’ most recent win over the Hurricanes on Sunday, and there’s no clear solution to the problem.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recently been on a downward spiral, going 3-5-2 in their last ten games.

After a the most recent victory of one of their division rivals, the Buffalo Sabres, the Leafs have reached an brand new low as an organization this season.

The Maple Leafs Sit Dead Last in the Eastern Conference Standings

After a 4-1 victory for the Sabres against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon, the Maple Leafs officially sit last in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 9-10-3. They are now four points back of the playoff picture, with a few extra games played.

As per Terry Koshan on X:

“The Sabres have beaten the Hurricanes this afternoon to move one point past the #Leafs, dropping Toronto into last place in the Eastern Conference.”

Their extremely frustrating season has also really implicated their playoff chances. As of right now, they have a higher likelihood of nabbing the first overall pick, rather than making the playoffs, which is downright embarrassing for a team that many pegged as a Stanley Cup contender coming into the season.

While we have seen impressive offensive production from star players like William Nylander, John Tavares, and even Matthew Knies when healthy, the lack of depth scoring, along with Auston Matthews’ average performance when healthy this season, has highlighted the absence of former Maple Leaf Mitch Marner, whose offensive talents have clearly been missed.

What Happens Next for the Maple Leafs

It is not certain that the Maple Leafs will finish last in the conference by season’s end, but if they do not elevate their play soon, they will likely miss the playoffs.

A major shakeup is needed to rejuvenate the team, but GM Brad Treliving will be up against it as he does not have a lot of quality assets to use as trade chips.
