Islanders , Kraken Shoot-out
Midway through the first period the Kraken had one shot on goal and zero scoring chances. Their first opportunity came just after the 10-minute mark from Vince Dunn when he fired a legitimate shot on Isles goalie David Rittich.
Matty Beniers hit the post with an effort down low at 11:20. Not much else developed. The game remained scoreless.
At 7:56 of the second period Seattle picked up its first power play opportunity when Isles winger Simon Holmstrom went off for a semi-phantom trip. The ensuing Kraken man advantage looked tired and failed to generate a shot.
It was a grind. The Isles played and lost the afternoon before at home, 2-1 to the St. Louis Blues. The Kraken played and won in overtime 3-2 the night before in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.
Seattle had ten shots on goal through two periods and their best scoring chance, a very rare one, came 38-minutes into the contest. Rittich stopped a Jaden Schwartz bid, point blank from the low slot. At this point Joey Daccord had made twenty saves for Seattle.
It was the first time this season the Kraken had played a scoreless game through forty minutes.
The excitement and the scoring chances increased in the third period as both teams tried to use up all of the fuel they had left in their tanks. The most effective line as the game progressed was made up of young Seattle legs: Rookie Berkly Catton, Jani Nyman and Shane Wright. They produced extended offensive zone time but no tangible results.
For the tenth time in 22 games this season and for the second straight evening the Kraken would play past regulation time.
The Islanders dominated possession time and the chances in the five-minute overtime, including for the final 19-seconds on the power play. Brandon Montour was in the box for tripping.
Nothing doing. Overall, Daccord made 34 saves; Rittich made 19. Both get credit for a shut-out, the seventh of Daccord’s NHL career.
One of the reasons Seattle acquired Freddie Gaudreau; his shoot-out ability. He scored the opening shot of the skills competition. It didn’t hold up when Bo Horvat scored in round-3 for the Isles to tie it. Kyle Palmieri won it in round-4 for the home team.
Seattle wrapped up a four-game road trip that unfolded over just six days with a record of 2-1-and-1 and jumped on an airplane to head home.
The Kraken host the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.
