Concord’s Ryan Philbrick, a defenseman on UNH men’s hockey team, is tearing up Hockey East with strong shifts on defense and has emerged as a threat on offense—earning himself the Army ROTC Hockey East Defender of the Week.

He’s in his first NCAA season as a freshman on the Wildcats squad after playing for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in the British Columbia Hockey League last season and for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League two years ago.

Philbrick scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for two points last Friday in the 6-3 win at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He also led the Wildcats with five blocks for the week, with three at RPI and two at Union College.

So far this season, he’s tied for second on the team with four goals and is tied for third with six points. Philbrick also leads the team with two game-winning goals. He leads the team with 22 blocks, enough to place him fifth in Hockey East.

He’s had an instant impact on the Wildcats (5-6, 2-3) in this early part of the season with tough games ahead against #10 UConn, Bentley and Maine.
