Andrei Svechnikov started slow in 2025/26, and now, Elliotte Friedman is reporting that earlier in the year, he was seeking a trade from Carolina. The Carolina Hurricanes have seemingly been building something special in recent years, and after another big off-season in which they acquired Nikolaj Ehlers and K’Andre Miller, hopes are high for the 2025/26 campaign.
They’re off to a great start as well, going 14-5-2 in their first 21 games as they sit atop the Metropolitan Division, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for everyone in the organization.
Andrei Svechnikov reportedly pushed for a trade
One such player is 25-year old Andrei Svechnikov, who has separated himself as a top tier player of the future in Carolina, but with 0 points through eight games to start the year, frustrations were mounting.
Through 21 games, he now has 7 goals and 12 points as he warms up alongside the rest of this very deep forward group, but according to Elliotte Friedman, he was open to the idea of a trade following his slow start to the season.
As mentioned, this comes on the back of a fantastic playoff run in which he had 8 goals and 12 points in 15 games played, but the frustrations seemingly almost got to a boiling point early in the season.
Those struggles saw Svechnikov demoted to the fourth-line, but given how much the team invested in him as a former No. 2 overall pick, he’s now back on the top line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis and producing once more.
For now, this matter seems put to rest, but if Svechnikov starts to struggle again, following Friedman’s comments, it may be a story to monitor very closely heading into the trade deadline.
