The Detroit Red Wings appear to have other plans for a veteran who appeared to be bound to remain in the American Hockey League.

However, here we are, a quarter of the season done, and Hamonic remained in the NHL and even took part in 13 games with the team.

Although he may not be the flashiest player, he still brings a lot to the team.

His head coach, Todd McLellan, made surprising comments about the veteran defenseman.

Todd McLellan Shares Great Words About Travis Hamonic

For McLellan, Hamonic is an important part of the team, quietly doing what he has to, including the small gestures that make him valuable.

Here’s what the Wings coach had to say about him:

“I think Travis, since game one, has become a really important part of this team. He just quietly goes about his business, but what you don’t see or hear or maybe recognize is all the little stuff he does on the bench and in the locker room, and with some of the younger defensemen. Very valuable and noticed by the staff.”

At 35 years old, Hamonic, who’s currently signed to a one-year, $1M deal with the Wings, could be convincing the Red Wings to keep him around after his contract expires.
